MY CAMPERS OFFERED STUDY OPPORTUNITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI
100 young people from 43 countries go through to the second round
One hundred teenagers from 43 countries have been selected for the second round of the international Millennium Youth Camp (MY Camp) application process. A total of 1453 applications were received and members of the Millennium Youth Camp Steering Group made the selections. Of the selected applicants, 52 are boys and 48 are girls.
"The applications we received reflect young people's concern about our planet," said Professor Maija Aksela, Chair of the MY Camp Steering Group. "Applicants are planning careers in science and want to change the future of the Earth for the better through their knowledge and their actions. They also exhibit a strong desire to join a group of like-minded peers."
Each of the 100 selected applicants will be contacted individually and informed of the criteria for the second round of the selection process. The MY Camp organisers extended their warmest thanks to everyone who submitted an application.
This year, in addition to great experiences, extending their knowhow and making new friends, MY Camp participants will be offered a remarkable opportunity. Based on their applications, the University of Helsinki will be offering both 2011 MY Campers and the 30 young people who attended the 2010 MY Camp places on its Faculty of Science degree programmes in chemistry, geology, mathematics, statistics and the physical sciences.
Finland's Aalto University will also be offering MY Campers places on some degree courses as non-degree students. Credits obtained in this way can contribute to the completion of degree studies, speeding up graduation.
"We're delighted that universities are taking such a positive attitude - it clearly demonstrates their trust in both the strict MY Camp qualification process and our high-level educational objectives," said Dr. Ainomaija Haarla, President & CEO of Technology Academy Finland and Chair of the MY Camp project.
Organised by Technology Academy Finland in co-operation with the Finnish Science Education Centre LUMA, the second MY Camp will take place on 11-17 June 2011. Selection of the 30 participants will be finalised by 15 March 2011.
Intended for young people aged between 16 and 19, the third MY Camp will be arranged in the summer of 2012. "If you didn't succeed this time, please try again next year," says Professor Aksela.
