MEET THE 2010 MILLENNIUM WINNER AT THE MILLENNIUM YOUTH FORUM

Millennium Youth Forum (MY Forum)
Friday 24 September 2010
The Finnish Science Centre Heureka, Tiedepuisto 1, Vantaa

How do you get to win the Millennium Technology Prize? Do you have to be a top scientist to build a solar cell? What are plastic electronics? And what does an ARM microprocessor look like? To find out, join us at MY Forum!

Organised this year for the fourth time, MY Forum is a scientific discussion event targeted at secondary-school pupils and first-year University and higher vocational level students. The keynote speaker will be Professor Michael Grätzel, the 2010 Millennium Technology Grand Prize winner, recognised as the developer of third-generation dye-sensitized solar cells. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session.

MY Forum participants will be able to learn about the award-winning innovations in the 2010 Millennium prize round - they will build Grätzel cells in special workshops, discover more about the flexible and virtually-unbreakable applications of plastic electronics based on research work by Professor Sir Richard Friend, and also be given the opportunity to spot the ARM microprocessor, developed by Professor Stephen Furber, among the components of a disassembled mobile phone.

Participants will also be able to practice using pipettes with top-level analysis equipment. The event will be crowned by a competition, and the winner will be awarded a backpack coated with a flexible solar panel. Based on Professor Grätzel’s innovation, this allows solar energy to be utilised for charging mobile phones and other low-power electronic devices.

The MY Forum event is free of charge. Participants will also receive a free ticket to the Heureka, The Finnish Science Centre, for the day of the event. Registration by 15 September 2010 at: http://www.kerhokeskus.fi/fi/tutkiva_nuori/millennium_youth_forum/myf_2010_ilmoittautuminen

The main organiser of MY Forum is Technology Academy Finland. Co-organisers are The Finnish Science Centre Heureka, the Centre for School Clubs and the Finnish Association of Graduate Engineers TEK.
