More than 100 candidates for the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize

The nomination period for the Millennium Technology Prize 2006, the world’s biggest technology award, has closed and the process of selecting a winner has begun. High-level proposals have been received from 32 countries.

Nomination period has closed

Nomination period for the Millennium Technology Prize 2006 winner has closed on the 31st of October 2005. Nominations were received from industrial organisations, research institutes, universities and academies all over the world. The Millennium Prize Foundation warmly thanks all the nominators. The Prize Winner 2006 will be announced on June 15. The festive award ceremony follows in Helsinki, Finland, on September 8. The Millennium Technology Prize is awarded every second year.

Sitra joined the Millennium Prize Foundation

The Finnish National Fund for Research and Development (Sitra)became a new member of the Millennium Prize Foundation. At the same time Sitra’s innovation programme's Executive Director, Mr Antti Hautamäki was appointed to the board of directors and Research Director, Mr Timo Hämäläinen to the foundation’s communication and programme committees.

The ongoing search for the Millennium Technology Prize winner 2006 ends in the end of October 2005. The prize, one million euros, is awarded for specific groundbreaking innovation that directly promotes people’s quality of life, contributes toward the realization of humane values and encourages sustainable development. Candidates are sought from across the world and all fields of technology.

Search for Millennium Winner Launched in Boston

World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, recipient of the first Millennium Technology Prize, joined Finland's Ambassador and officials from the Millennium Prize Foundation to announce the plans.

Nomination of candidates for Millennium Technology Prize begins

The nomination of candidates for the Millennium Technology Prize, the biggest of its kind in the world, has started. The award is made for a technological innovation that brings significant improvement to the quality of life. Nominations, which can be made from all areas of technology and all parts of the world, must be submitted by the closing date, October 31, 2005. The award is made by the independent Millennium Prize Foundation, which has been set up through collaboration between the Finnish private and public sectors.

Three people-centred WWW projects in Oulu win Special Recognition Awards

To celebrate the ways in which innovative Millennium Technology Prize-winning technology is benefiting Finland, Special Recognition Awards were presented at today’s event to three people-centred applications which exploit World Wide Web and Internet technology. The award winners are: Poliklinikka.net (”Know your own health”); www.irc.org (Internet Relay Chat (IRC), technology which makes real-time conversation via the Internet possible); and Moop (a mobile- and network-based learning environment).

Three people-centred WWW projects in Tampere win Special Recognition Awards

The continuing development opportunities offered by the World Wide Web were highlighted today by Tim Berners-Lee, winner of the first-ever Millennium Technology Prize in 2004, at a ceremony organised in the City of Tampere by the Millennium Prize Foundation. The world-wide search for nominations for the 2006 Millennium Technology Prize was also launched.

New members for the Selection Committee of the world’s largest technology prize

The Board of the Millennium Prize Foundation has appointed four new members to the Selection Committee. The one million euro Millennium Technology Prize is awarded every second year for an innovation that significantly improves people’s quality of life. The purpose of the prize is to bring people and technology closer to each other.
