President of Finland presents first-ever Millennium Technology Prize to Tim Berners-Lee
The first-ever Millennium Technology Prize was today awarded to Tim Berners-Lee for the invention of the WWW service on the internet. The prize of one million euros and the prize trophy, “The Peak”, were presented by the President of The Republic of Finland, Ms. Tarja Halonen, in Finlandia Hall.

I hope we can all use the Web to realise that other people are just like ourselves even if they speak different languages or have different abilities. The message sent by Tim Berners-Lee and the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to schools all over the world during a UN Summit on the Information Society in December 2003.

Media panel: Technology story should simplify and exaggerate
"Making a story of science and technology is always a simplification and an exaggeration at the same time", stated Tom Standage from the Economist in a media panel on 15 June 2004 at the Finlandia Hall, Finland. The panel consisted of seven media representatives from around the world and was moderated by Tim Sebastian, known from the BBC Hardtalk programme.

Millennium Technology Events to promote humane technology
The world’s largest recognition for technological innovation, the Millennium Technology Prize, is awarded for the first time next Tuesday at 14:00 to the inventor of the internet’s World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee. The award is made by the President of the Republic of Finland, Ms. Tarja Halonen, in Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, Finland. The Finnish Technology Award Foundation arranges several technology events in connection with the award ceremony.

The Millennium Technology Prize is awarded biennially for outstanding innovations that directly promote people's quality of life, are based on humane values, and encourage sustainable economic development. The Prize is awarded by an independent fund, the Finnish Technology Award Foundation.

Seven Finnish artists to Millennium Technology Prize trophy design competition
A competition for the design of the Millennium Technology Prize trophy has been opened. The trophy will be awarded to the winners of the Millennium Technology Prize, the world’s biggest technology award. The first biannual award ceremony takes place in Helsinki on 15th June 2004. The plan is to locate a piece of art, based on the idea of the trophy, on a popular site in the metropolitan area of Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa. The competition is arranged between seven accomplished Finnish artists, selected by the Finnish Technology Award Foundation in co-operation with the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

The world’s biggest technology prize calls for a people-centred development discussion
The world’s biggest technology award, the one million euro Millennium Technology Prize will be awarded for the first time on 15th June 2004 in Helsinki, Finland. The prize ceremonies will be accompanied by a technology conference that explores the opportunities, dangers and threats of technological change on people’s quality of life. The conference, held on 13-16 June in Espoo, is geared towards decision makers and opinion leaders in society, chief technology officers and leading figures in the scientific community.
